Another Year, Another Move

When L and I found out we’d be moving again this year back in late July we quickly drafted battle plans. Seeing as the new location was roughly 30 yards from the old, we would forgo the whole purchasing of boxes and moving van, that sort of thing. We would rely (and DID rely) on my brother for muscle, and just schlep all of our belongings from one apartment to the other, piece of furniture by piece, stack of books by stack of books, dresser drawer by drawer.

As such the move snuck up on us. My brother and I made plans for his visit just one week ago. Did I mention how we couldn’t have done this without him? This past Friday arrived and the weather forecast looked craptacular. Big downside of moving this way? Boxes afford a modicum of protection against the elements. Torrential downpours were in the mix as tropical storm uroboros or whatever this one was called dragged its way up the east coast. Jon drove down the Mass Pike through heavy rains and it continued to pour well into the evening as he set up his Nintendo Wii and we relived our glory years, beating Bubble Bobble and winning the ‘mirrored’ Flower Cup on ‘Extra’ in Mario Kart 64.

That night I had trouble sleeping. I often do when I have a huge amount of things to be accomplished the next day. I tossed and turned and woke up with a horrible sore throat. Turns out my immune system decided this was the correct moment for me to get the cold L had a week ago. My throat was so swollen and sore it was difficult to drink water, but otherwise I felt fine and the weather was misty but move-in-able so off we went. By 2pm we had all of the mega-pieces across (mattress, sleeper sofa, dining room table, bookcases) and by 3:30pm Jon was back on the road.

Buoyed by Tylenol Cold ‘n Flu we continued to bring stuff over all yesterday and are still not done. One positive aspect of the move is that I can’t tell how much of the soreness I feel is because of the move or because of the cold. A wall, a literal wall of books remains in our old living room and we have absolutely no idea where they will go. I suppose we could make a blanket fort out of novels. And then there is the cleaning of the old place and the actual settling in of the new place. Coupled with the fact we will be away this weekend. I estimate that we should be ready for people to come over… roughly by the time we will be moving along once again.

Reading: yeah, right. have had plenty of time for that lately.
